Making Tax Digital: What You Need to Know

Tax is changing — again!
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is coming, but it doesn’t have to be stressful, especially if you get ahead of it.
Whether you're a sole trader or a landlord, here’s what’s coming — and how we can help you stay on top of it.
🗓️Key MTD Deadlines – When It’ll Affect You
HMRC is rolling out MTD in stages. Here’s when it’ll apply to you based on your income:
- April 2026 – If you earn over £50,000
- April 2027 – If you earn over £30,000
- April 2028 – If you earn over £20,000
💻 What does MTD actually mean?
It means you’ll need to:
- Keep digital records of income and expenses
- Submit quarterly updates to HMRC using approved software
- Do a final summary at the end of the year (like a tax return – but digital)
🧾 Can I still use spreadsheets?
Technically yes, but you’ll need bridging software that links to HMRC. Most people find it way easier to just use tools like QuickBooks, Xero, or FreeAgent — and we can help you get set up.
